Reading StrategiesExpect the text to make sense!

  • Plan and Monitor
    • Skim – preview titles and photos
    • Predict -what is it about
    • Question - ask yourself "Why?", "Who?" and "What is next?"
    • Purpose - why are you reading


  • Clarifying Ideas
    • Read on - the next part of the text may help you understand
    • Reread - read it again
    • Break up sentences - look at the parts of the sentences to see how they connect
    • Slow down - just read it slower and more carefully


  • Clarifying words
    • Reread - read it again
    • Context clues - look for other words that may mean the same thing
    • Analyze clues - check out what is said, look for a definition
    • Replace the word - try putting a word you know in its place to see if it make sense
